Hey Phil, I guess the first question is whether or not you're an insured member or associate member of the Knights. If you're insured, talk to your insurance agent to see what your options are. I know the Knights deal largly in life insurance policies so I'm not sure what benefits are out there for unemployment insurance (which probably aren't many and are plan dependent).

At the end of every council meeting of mine, we ask for brother knights to bring forward those Knights who are sick and in distress. I would say unemployment falls under the in distress category. Councils should be able to run a small collection to make sure your basic needs are met. Perhaps the Knights can only do so much and other organizations need to be sought for the help you need.

If it's any consolation, I can feel some of your pain. My wife and I plus our expectant child are currently living off my substitute teaching 3-4 days a week. My wife is immigrating to Canada right now so she can't work and doesn't have health coverage for our pre-natal medical bills. Since I'm her sponsor into Canada, I can't apply for unemployment insurance until she's approved.

We pray together every night for God to help us meet our needs. Our situation is by no means dire, and we have family backup, but it requires us to live simply and have faith.

Wish I could be of more help Phil.

I will pray for you and your family,

Michael

I found this website while looking for someone to sound off to. My family is in bad shape due to the economy. I am a 4th degree Sir Knight and have been in the order for over 14 years. My wife has been unemployed since last June and I was laid-off a week before Thanksgiving. She informed 4 brother knights of our situation; these brothers are current and past state leaders. I don't know if they conveyed our plight to others, but we might as well have dissappeared off the face of the earth. Is this commonplace in the KofC or just Kentucky?
My wife and I have always been there to help others including brother knights and their spouses. I firmly believe and strive to live the principles of Knighthood and exemplify these traits for others. Mine is not an isolated case. I have seen this happen before to others and did what I could do but could not inspire others or the KofC in general to help. Maybe we all should go to an exemplification and actually listen to the words and lessons taught!
Thank you for allowing me to blow off a little steam. I am very dissappointed in my brothers in KY.

Fraternally,
Phil Hundley, PGK PFN

"I want to recommend to you in a special way the Rosary, a source of profound Christian life. Try to pray it every day, alone or with your family, repeating with great faith those basic prayers of the Christian: the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory be to the Father. Meditate on those scenes of the life of Jesus and Mary of which the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries remind us. Thus you will learn in the joyful mysteries to think of Jesus who became poor and lowly, a child, for our sake, to serve us. You will feel encouraged to serve your neighbour in his needs. In the sorrowful mysteries you will realize that accepting the sufferings of this life with docility and love, like Christ in his Passion, leads to happiness and joy which is expressed in the glorious mysteries of Christ and Mary in the hope of eternal life".

A symbol of the unity among peoples in the Americas, the rose had been carried over the course of months from Canada and through the United States.
The rose is also a symbol of the Order’s commitment to the pro-life cause, and Our Lady of Guadalupe is claimed as the patroness of the pro-life movement. The rose’s final destination is the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, December 12.
For 50 years, the Knights of Columbus has sponsored the Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Program to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of America. The purpose of the is to honor our Lady of Guadalupe and to reaffirm our commitment to the sanctity of life.
This past May, Silver Rose left Ontario, Canada, and have been traversing the United States by a Western, Central and Eastern route. In November, all three Roses will come together in Laredo, Texas, to travel over the International Bridge and be delivered to Knights from Monterey, Mexico. The National Catholic Reporter reported on the forthcoming encyclical
focusing on the economy, "Charity in Truth" (Caritas in Veritate). Pope
Benedict XVI recently insisted that underneath the current global economic
crisis lurks greed, rooted in original sin, and that reform of global
economic architecture will be of little use without the conversion of
individual hearts.

"Where there are no just people, there is no justice," Benedict said. "For
that reason, education in justice must be a priority. Perhaps we could say
'the' priority. Good structures can't be developed if they're opposed by
egoism, including that of people of great technical competence."

The new encyclical will concentrate less on structural analysis than on the
ethical and spiritual premises of economic justice. The Holy Father will
also say that social activism and personal piety are not at odds, but
mutually dependent. The Vatican is expected to release Benedict's third
encyclical letter later in March.
