WOW, this is a pretty quiet site! No one has anything to comment upon regarding the Knights? Here's one, do any of you participate in the VAVS program within the 4th Degree? If so, what has your experience been? I am curious to see how well this operates in other areas. It is difficult in MT for our rep.s to make all of the meetings since we are so large and spread out.

Phil:

I know in my own Council, Assembly, and District there are times when Brother Knights and/or members of their families fall upon hard times and we go out of our way to assist our Brothers. "Except for the Grace of God go I..." Over the years, we have found that it is best to have a committee set up within the Council for example to look at each of these cases on an individual basis. This is not brought up to the general membership in an effort to reduce any embarrassment. The Knights of Columbus was formed by Fr, McGivney just for this kind of situation.I am sorry to hear of your experiences in KY, that has not been the experience in my KC life.

Welcome Edwin to the KofC group.

You should all check out the Pope's letter to Knights via Cardinal Bertone for the Supreme convention: http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/pope-to-knights-best-response-to-attacks-against-the-church-is-greater-fidelity/

Though we'll get a thorough report in the Columbia, anyone with insider reports on Supreme Convention stuff can post here for us all.

Just want to say a word of thanks to all of the Knights of Columbus who made it possible for myself and the other state chaplains to participate in the international priest conference to end the Year For Priests last month. We all had a great experience and made some good connections.

Thanks again

This is taken from a book on the history of The Knights of Columbus, written by Christopher J. Kauffman.

The 5th Supreme Knight of the Order of the Knights of Columbus had this to say in his article entitled "True Knighthood." After quoting Edmund Burke on the demise of Chivalry, Edward Hearn said, "The Knights of Columbus are doing a noble and a beautiful work in seeking to re-establish those old ideal. The finer graces and charms of manner which are the fruits of a high social development blossom to the fullest extent in the social life of the Knights of Columbus." He view the Knights of Columbus council as a school for the restoration of Chivalric Ideals within a society replete with materialism. In contrast to "the feverish desire for material success which characterizes American Life, with all its hurry and unrest," the desire of the ideal Knight is to live according to the virtues of loyalty, charity, courtesy, and modesty, "self-denial and a careful respect for the feelings of others......a readiness to relieve want, and a liberality in all things."

Just as the Medieval Knight represented the ideal Christian layman, so the modern Knight of Columbus should represent the ideal American Catholic layman. "To make the type of Catholic gentleman the highest of American types is the ideal of the Knights of Columbus."
.....Edward L. Hearn was Supreme Knight of the Knights of columbus from 1899 until 1909. That was 101 years ago. It seems that not too much has changed in our world since then.....

.......Father McGivney decided to call our society an organization of Knights because Knighthood had long been equated with the role of protector. Father McGivney then concluded that the Knights of today must become protectors of life; "We must protect right; we must protect innocence; we must protect truth."

Brother Philip & Brother Bill, thank you very much for the kind welcome. I look forward to getting to know you and many more of my Brother Knights on this forum. Let me leave you with three of my favorite quotes about "True Catholic Knighthood:

......."The word 'Knight' is an old, old word. It means a Servant. That is well thought out, because he who would be master must first learn his trade by being mastered."

......."Therefore, you should know now that it is high time to awake from sleep, for our Salvation is nearer than we thought at first. The night is far spent and the day is at hand! So cast off the works of Darkness and put on the 'Armor of Light.'
Romans: Chapter 13, Verses 11 and 12

......."A Knight may Quest for the Holy Grail over land and sea, in many climes, without avail. Yet, he may find it in the cup of cold water, extended to a thirsty person at his own front door."
